QUEENSBRIDGE — The family and friends of a Japanese student who was fatally struck by an NYPD patrol car last year will mark the anniversary of his death with a memorial vigil in Queens early Friday morning.
Ryo Oyamada, a 24-year-old who had moved to New York from Kobe City, Japan to study English, was crossing a Long Island City street on Feb. 21 of last year when he was struck and killed by a police car that was responding to a 911 call nearby.
His family and friends will gather at the scene of the incident, at 40th Avenue and 10th Street in Queensbridge, at 12:30 a.m. Friday for a candlelight memorial, according to Chris Fitzgerald, an attorney representing the family.
Oyamada's family filed an $8 million lawsuit against the city last spring, and have been seeking access to information surrounding the circumstances of his death.
