FORT GEORGE — Gather your broken watches and dead iPhones — Pop-Up Repair is back.
The travelling, all-volunteer repair crew announced Monday that they'll set up shop at the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood for a weeklong stay starting Sunday, giving uptowners a chance to get their household gadgets fixed.
Pop-Up Repair made waves last year as a one-month experiment in sustainablity. The shop's founders, Inwood residents Sandra Goldmark and Michael Banta, opened up shop for the month of June after they raised more than $9,000 on Indiegogo. During the month, the crew repaired dozens of lamps, iPhones and other household items.
Since then, the group has hit the road, teaming up with the online repair gurus iFixit on Black Friday to repair iPhone batteries for shoppers in the Meatpacking District before returning to Inwood for a week in December.
In addition to their stay at the Washington Heights Y, the group announced on their Facebook page a new Pop-Up Repair van and plans to do pick up and drop-off repair services at the Inwood and Upper West Side Greenmarkets. They are also making plans to pop up outside of Manhattan.
Prices for repairs vary based on the object being repaired. During their December run in Inwood the group fixed lamps for $25-$40, replaced iPhone batteries for $15-$20, and made regular gloves iPhone friendly for as little as $10.
