Man Dies in Harlem Apartment Fire, Police Say

A 68-year-old man was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital after his apartment at 2657 Frederick Douglass Blvd. caught fire Wednesday morning, police said.

HARLEM — A 68-year-old man was killed after his apartment on Frederick Douglass Boulevard near 142nd Street caught fire Wednesday morning, the FDNY said. 

About 60 firefighters raced to the fire when it erupted in a third-floor apartment of at 2657 Frederick Douglass Blvd. near 142nd Street just after 6 a.m., police said. They found the man unconscious inside his apartment, police said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was declared dead. Another man, whose identity was not released, was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, the FDNY said.

The blaze was brought under control about 48 minutes later, and investigators were still trying to determine its cause, police and fire officials said.
