WEST VILLAGE — A water main on Greenwich Street ruptured early Tuesday morning, temporarily forcing road closures as workers struggled to repair the city's third water main break this month.
A 12 inch water main that was installed in 1870 ruptured near 609 Greenwich St., near Clarkson Street, about 1 a.m. spilling water into the street there, according to the Department of Environmental Protection.
"We stopped the leak. We shut down that section of pipe," said DEP spokesman Chris Gilbride. "Crews are working to repair and replace about a six foot section."
Greenwich Street was temporarily closed between Clarkson Street and Leroy Street. Clarkson Street was closed between Hudson Street and Washington Street, according to the Office of Emergency Management said.
Water kept flowing to nearby buildings through other water lines, Gilbride said.
Tuesday's break comes only a day after another water main broke in East Harlem and flooded exits to the FDR Drive. Earlier this month, a broken water main closed down part of Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village.
