EAST VILLAGE — A woman was raped early Monday by a man who followed her down the hallway of her East Village building and then pushed his way into her apartment, police said.

The attack took place inside a building on East Seventh Street between First and Second avenues about 3:30 a.m., police said.

The 22-year-old victim was taken to Beth Israel Hospital for treatment, the NYPD said.

Police described the suspect as a 5-foot-6 man weighing 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white hat, blue sweatshirt and blue jeans, police said.

Tenants said detectives were combing the building for evidence early Monday.

"They had flashlights and were looking on the fire escapes," said a 27-year-old woman, who declined to give her name. "It's terrifying something like that would happen. I hope they solve this fast."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips by logging onto Crime Stoppers' website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or by texting their tips to CRIMES (274637), then entering TIP577.
