GREENPOINT — A shattered light bulb was found on the ground at the base of a recently installed McCarren park baseball field light Monday morning, worrying locals who fear another piece of the towering structure could come crashing to the ground.
The brand new pole and bulbs were installed this summer after the entire fixture was toppled during Hurricane Sandy, leaving players without illumination for their nighttime sports games for close to a year after the storm.
The bulb — one of 25 total in the light fixture — was discovered shattered on the field Monday morning near Driggs Avenue and North 12th Street. The frosted glass and metal bulb was still lying in the dirt on Monday afternoon.
"I won't be walking my dog near them, and ... I will worry about people getting hit by other ones in the future," said McCarren Park neighbor Meredith Chesney, whose husband first noticed the fallen bulb Monday morning.
"I am really disappointed that a new, replacement fixture could last only a tiny fraction of the lifespan of the original lights," she added.
The Parks Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
