Kwanzaa Festival and Holiday Tree Lighting This Weekend

CORONA — Snow is in the forecast — and so are holiday festivals this weekend in Queens.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Langston Hughes Library in Corona will host its 29th annual Kwanzaa festival, with live music, activities for families and a chance to shop for and make your own holiday crafts.

Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras and outgoing Queens Borough President Helen Marshall will help host the festivities, which include African folktales, drums and dancing. There will also be a screening of "The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration."

The festivities run from 10:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., and is free for all ages.

On Sunday, Dec. 15, Diversity Plaza will host a holiday tree lighting and festival, co-sponsored by SUKHI and The Friends of Diversity Plaza which includes Councilman Danny Dromm, the Jackson Heights Beautification Group and the Neighborhood Plaza Partnership.

The lighting of the 16-foot tree starts at 6:30 p.m., and there will be live music in the plaza.

The plaza's festival with music then runs through Jan. 1, 2014.

The festival will include the lighting of the Jackson Heights plaza's holiday tree, and the event starts Sunday at 6 p.m.
