CARROLL GARDENS — Wearable Collections, a clothing recycling company, has teamed up with moving company Movers, Not Shakers! to help collect unwanted apparel from around the city.
“Moving is stressful enough,” said Adam Baruchowitz, founder of Wearable Collections, in a video created to showcase the new partnership.
“Maybe we can ease some of that burden by allowing them to leave their clothing in the corner of their apartment.”
Customers can set aside clothes, textiles, shoes, hats and accessories and Movers, Not Shakers! will gather them to be redistributed and sold to emerging markets around the world, he continued.
Their goal is to divert more than 100,000 pounds of textiles from landfills next year through the partnership, neighborhood blog Pardon Me For Asking first reported.
During moving day, people often discover unworn and unwanted clothes that they’re looking to donate, but are usually left discarded.
“I think it’s a time when people are really wasteful,” Baruchowitz told DNAinfo New York.
The two companies also worked together during Hurricane Sandy where Movers, Not Shakers! trucks helped collect more than 50,000 pounds of clothes.
Wearable Collections has collection bins across the city and most recently, they opened their first drop-off site in Carroll Gardens.
Roughly half of their collection is sold as secondhand clothing around the world, with a portion of sales dedicated to charity, and the rest is either turned into rags or shredded to form low-grade fiber products.
“We’re always trying to make life convenient for people for recycling clothing,” he said.
