ELMHURST — Police have arrested the boyfriend of a young mother who was shot and killed inside her apartment while her 5-year-old son was at home.

Rolando Perez, 33, was arrested early Wednesday after police say he shot Carolina Cobena, 29, twice in the head inside the apartment they shared on 52nd Avenue.

Cobena was inside her apartment along with two men — Perez and a witness — along with her son, who was in another room, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Tuesday.

He said the men had been drinking "excessively" throughout the day in the home, near Justice Avenue.

According to the commissioner, the witness spotted the victim and her boyfriend go into a room "and he hears a shot."

Cobena was hit twice in the head, and two 9mm handguns were recovered in the apartment, Kelly said.

Her son was not harmed, according to the commissioner.

Perez was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm.
