Yoga Clothing Store to Replace Jeans Shop on Austin Street

By Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska | November 26, 2013 9:59am

QUEENS — A new yoga clothing store is coming to Austin Street, coming on the heels of a growing number of yoga studios and gyms in the neighborhood, the owner said.

The shop will replace Austin Jeans at 70-38 Austin St., near 71st/Continental Avenue, which had been at that location for more than 20 years.

The new store — Austin Athletica — will offer women's active wear and yoga clothing, including yoga pants, T-shirts, tops and sport jackets, said the owner, Neal Azair, 42.

Azair, who grew up in Forest Hills, said he came up with the idea when he came to Austin Street a couple of months ago to visit an old friend in the neighborhood.

"I think that this area really needs it, because there are two gyms, a kickboxing place and about 5 yoga studios," he said.

Azair also said that wearing sports clothes is currently a popular fashion trend. "The more casual, the better," he said.

The store won't carry shoes, he said, but its offerings may expand depending on customers' demands.

Azair, who promises affordable prices ranging from $10-50, said he is planning to have the store open in time for Black Friday.
