BROOKLYN — An off-duty police officer carjacked in Canarsie Thursday escaped death after she made a daring leap out of the back of her moving vehicle and stared down her attackers, one of whose gun jammed up as he tried to shoot her, police said.
The dramatic confrontation unfolded when the woman officer was getting into her car to go to work at a Manhattan precinct at 5:10 a.m. Two gunmen approached the unidentified officer with weapons drawn — near a 7-Eleven on Farragut Road, sources said. Another man acted as a lookout, a source said.
"What are you doing," she asked one of them, according to a source. "I'm a cop."
"I don't give a f---," the gunmen responded, and forced the seven-year NYPD veteran into the backseat of her Infinity at gunpoint.
As the assailants drove away, the officer, who was not carrying a gun, leapt from the car.
One of the gunman then got out of the car and pointed a gun at her, but it appears the weapon misfired, sources said. He was standing roughly 10 feet away from her, sources said.
The officer then ran away and was not harmed.
Police tracked down one suspect Thursday afternoon at Newport Street and Van Sinderen Avenue in Brownsville. Two other men were taken into custody, but police could not say whether they were involved.
A police spokesman confirmed the carjacking but had no information about arrests.
