MANHATTAN — A 30-year-old father of three was fatally shot outside a Lower East Side public housing complex on Sunday morning, police and nearby residents said.

The victim, George Taliferro, was discovered about 4:15 a.m. when police responding to a 911 call found the victim lying in front of 15 St. James Place, with three gunshot wounds to his torso, police said.

He was rushed to Downtown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

No one had been arrested as of Monday.

"He grew up in Smith Houses and had children here," said Aixa Torres, the tenant association president at Smith Houses. She said she didn't think Taliferro still lived in the complex, but he came there often to visit his three kids, including his 5-year-old daughter.

"It was a real quiet Saturday and then this happened. Whatever way you look at it it's sad," she said, adding that there had not been a fatal shooting at Smith Houses in three years.

Other residents of Smith Houses who did not want to give their names said he was a dedicated dad who had been working as a maintenance worker.

As of Monday morning, Torres said the grandmother of the 5-year-old girl had yet to break the news to the child that her father had died.

"People liked him," she said. "The grandmother of his child was very flattened by it."
