THE BRONX — An Olinville man was shot to death in his own home Tuesday morning when a gunman came looking for his friend and shot him instead, an NYPD spokesman said.

Erwin Elliot, 44, was in his East 221st Street home, near Carpenter Avenue, when a gunman looking for Elliot's friend came into his home at 1:15 a.m., police said.

The gunman shot him in the head, the NYPD said. Police said Elliot's body was found in his basement stairwell. He was declared dead at the scene, police said.

The gunman, whose identity was not released, fled and remained at large Tuesday morning, the NYPD said.
