WILLIAMSBURG — A Brooklyn grandmother was hospitalized Friday afternoon after being struck by a school bus while crossing midblock on Division Avenue near Marcy Avenue, police said.
The bus carrying children from a local yeshiva was traveling northbound about 1 p.m. on Division Avenue when it hit the 65-year-old woman, according to the NYPD.
The unidentified woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she was listed in critical condition, police said.
Neighbors said the victim, a mother of six children and grandmother many times over, had become a widow last year.
The driver, who neighbors said had been a longtime bus operator, remained at the scene. The police said the investigation is ongoing.
"He's a very careful driver. He's a good man and a nice man," neighbor Edith Gombo said. She said that he would often wait until the mothers dropping off their children at the bus stop were back on the sidewalk before driving away.
"He drove my children and my children liked being on the bus," another neighbor, Betty, who would only giver her first name. "He's a very conservative driver."
