DUMBO — Street photographer Brandon Stanton will be celebrating the launch of his first book "Humans of New York" — named after his hugely popular photo blog — at PowerHouse Arena and the event is expected to draw a crowd.

PowerHouse staff are bracing for the large number of expected guests at the DUMBO bookstore where Stanton — whose blog has over 1 million followers — will speak and then sign books.

"We are anticipating a huge turnout for the event," said organizer Justin Levine. "But we hope to accommodate the large number of fans."

On Oct. 15 Stanton's official book launch packed the Barnes and Noble in Union Square with fans waiting more than three hours to get a book signed.

"The Union Square Barnes and Noble is the largest in the world, and several members of the staff remarked that the HONY event was the largest they’d ever seen," Stanton wrote on his blog after the event. "Sorry to anyone who may have been turned away by security. I think they were a little bit frightened."

Stanton started Humans of New York in 2010 calling it a "photographic census of New York City." He spent several hours each day taking portraits of New Yorkers and posting them on Tumblr. But the blog became less about photography and more about storytelling when he started to caption his photos with small insights into the lives of his subjects. Humans of New York now has over 5,000 captioned portraits. The book features 400 of those photos.

The Brooklyn Humans of New York book launch takes place on Oct. 22 at PowerHouse Arena in DUMBO at 7:00 p.m. To rsvp email RSVP@powerHouseArena.com.
