CARROLL GARDENS — Construction will begin this month on a soon-to-be refurbished neighborhood dog run, officials say.
The dog run in Dimattina Playground, at Hicks and Rapelye streets, will be fitted with separate dog runs for small and large dogs and drinking fountains for pups and their owners, according to a spokeswoman from the Department of Parks & Recreation.
The $450,000 project will also include a new gravel surface, lighting, benches, fencing and decorative plants, the spokeswoman said in an email.
About $225,000 has been allocated for the construction from Borough President Marty Markowitz and Councilman Brad Lander.
The project should be completed within a year.
Livia Rurarz-Huygens, who lives in Carroll Gardens, visits the dog run twice a day with her foxhound, Kazuki, she said.
But the misshapen concrete slabs that cover the dog run’s surface can be hazardous for active pups running around the park, said Rurarz-Huygens, who was at the dog run Monday with Kazuki and Mira, a relative’s dog.
“A slippery surface is the worst thing for them,” she said.
