MIDTOWN — New Jersey Transit commuters faced delays of up to an hour Tuesday morning after a systemwide signal problem temporarily suspended service.

Signals were lost on all rail lines except the Northeast Corridor, which is contolled by Amtrak, at 9 a.m. after both the main server and back up server for the computers that control the railroad's train system shut down at the same time, MTA officials said.

NJ Transit halted service until the signals could be restored, causing a suspension of more than an hour. Crews manually moved trains to nearby stations so that passengers could exit, officials said.

New Jersey Transit spokesman William Smith said nothing similar to today's problem has ever happened before, and that the cause is still unkown.

"We'll be investigating what happened, to make sure it doesn't happen again in the future," he told DNAinfo.

All regular service resumed by 10:15 a.m., and Smith said riders should expect residual delays of up to an hour. The delays were not expected to affect the evening commute, he said.

Because of the service suspension, New Jersey Transit rail passes were being honored on New Jersey Transit busses and light rail, as well as private carrier bus lines and PATH trains.
