WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Renovations to the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal could finally begin soon.
The renovations, which were supposed to start during the first quarter of 2013, are now slated to begin before the end of the year, a Port Authority of New York & New Jersey spokesman told DNAinfo New York.
"Pre-construction activities are currently underway and work will begin later this year," authority spokesman Chris Valens said.
The Port Authority declined to provide a detailed construction schedule.
The $183 million renovations — which will spruce up the 50-year-old station with a new interior, exterior and 120,000 square feet of retail space — were delayed earlier this year when the project's developer, GWB Development Venture LLC, switched contractors.
The renovations were first announced in 2008, but were put on hold because of the recession. A dozen businesses moved out of the bus terminal in advance of the repairs, leaving the station without retail for commuters.
The renovations are scheduled to be completed in 2015, Valens said.
