Get a Sneak Peek of Governors Island's Almost-Completed Park This Weekend

GOVERNORS ISLAND — Governors Island closes for the season this weekend, but there’s still time to grab a sneak peak of the island’s nearly completed 30-acre park.

The Trust for Governors Island is inviting the public to come take a tour, or just wander around, in the construction site of a new, expansive green space called Governors Island Park.

The overhauled public space, slated to be done at the end of October, will include ball fields, a 1,500 tree-filled grove dotted with hammocks and maze-like hedges.

The new park will be open to the public starting in May 2014, when the island reopens for the season, a Governors Island spokeswoman said.

Governors Island Park is just one piece of a massive plan for transforming the former Coast Guard base. The city plans to invest more than $260 million by 2014 to overhaul the island’s infrastructure.

A series of massive hills, made from landfill, are also under construction and will offer sweeping views of the city's skyline when they are done in 2015.
