CARROLL GARDENS – A row of kiosks that have stood abandoned on Smith Street for years is finally being removed.
The three red-and-white containers — which until three years ago were occupied by the Brooklyn Indie Market, where vendors once sold handcrafted products — were being dismantled and removed by two workers Thursday morning.
The story was first reported by local blog Pardon Me For Asking.
A large, rundown tent that stands adjacent to the kiosks at Smith and Union streets is also being removed, one worker said.
Since the end of 2010, the containers have been “unused and unlocked,” according to the blog, which also reported that the site will soon carry a billboard.
Over the years, trash has collected around the graffiti-covered kiosks at the site, which is owned by 336 Union Realty LLC, according to city documents.
Jeffrey Ull, one of the site's landlords, declined to comment for the story.
No permits have been issued for the site, according to the Department of Buildings.
