CHELSEA — The soon-to-be-redeveloped Pier 57 got a spiffy new moniker and some high-profile tenants.
The Hudson River Park pier, between West 16th and West 17th streets, will henceforth be known as SuperPier, and it will feature a rock-climbing wall, an Opening Ceremony boutique and an Andre Balazs-run spa and beach club, the developer announced.
Formerly an MTA bus garage, the 560,000-square-foot pier will soon receive a $200 million overhaul by Youngwoo & Associates, with the goal of becoming a cash generator for the beleaguered park.
The developer drew the new SuperPier name from a 1952 article in Popular Mechanics about Pier 57's construction, The New York Times reported.
SuperPier will have a grass-covered green roof and retail spaces built into old shipping containers when it opens in 2015.
Rock-climbing gym Brooklyn Boulders will open a new outpost in the pier's basement and possibly an ice-climbing wall outside, the Times reported.
While construction is set to begin in October, three restaurants, including Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, set up shop at the pier over the summer.
