JACKSON HEIGHTS — A family-owned supermarket that’s been a neighborhood standby for decades has a new name and some upscale new products, the owners say.

The Met Foodmarkets on 37th Avenue became Foodtown on Aug. 10, and now features more gluten-free and organic foods.

They will also run special sales on good-for-you items and run a column aimed at healthy eating in their weekly circular, the family said.

And it has a large selection of international products and specialty foods.

The store is still operated by the same family, the Ferreira’s, which has owned the supermarket at the same location since 1975.

“The community of Jackson Heights has known our family as Met Foodmarkets for the past 15 years, and we plan to remain here as Ferreira Foodtown to serve the community for many years to come,” said owner Jason Ferreira.

“Jackson Heights is a great family and close-knit community, and we like to provide them with the best, local neighborhood food and service they deserve."
