QUEENS — A Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a couple, who officials said apparently jumped from the platform at the Hollis station Monday night, authorities said.

The incident happened about 10:15 p.m. as a westbound train from Huntington was bypassing the station on its way to Manhattan, said Sal Arena, an MTA spokesman.

Investigators said the man and woman were about 30-years old when they were hit by the train, which was traveling about 80 mph.

“According to the MTA police, these individuals apparently jumped from the edge of the platform into the oncoming train,” Arena said.

The train's engineer told the MTA police that "he spotted the couple just moments before they jumped in front of his cab from the middle of the westbound platform," according to a released statement.

The impact broke the windshield of the engineer’s cab, according to the MTA. He was taken to North Shore University Hospital, where he was treated for cuts, and released.
