MIDTOWN — They're back.

To celebrate the long-waited return of the cream-filled American classic, a crew of Hostess employees handed out free Twinkies on 48th Street and Sixth Avenue Monday.

The food company's truck will be there until they run out of Twinkies, or 5 p.m., a spokesman said.

Sweet tooths throughout the country have been without Twinkies for nine months, when Hostess announced its bankruptcy. But now that the company is under new management, one of its first orders of business was to bring back the beloved snack.

People on their lunch break and tourists wandering around Midtown were happy to see the big red truck doling out the iconic snacks free of charge.

“I’ve been wanting a Twinkie since they took them away,” Danny Perillo, 22, said with a mouthful of the spongy yellow treat.

Hostess even made an interactive map that keeps track of where Twinkies are sold.

For some, like Michael Pina, 44, eating a Twinkie brings back childhood memories.

“When I was a kid, my mom used to put one in my lunchbox every day,” he said.

For younger people, the return of the Twinkie provided the perfect opportunity to overindulge on junk food.

“I didn’t have them as a kid because I wasn’t allowed to have too much sugar,” said Eli Cohen, 15, gripping three Twinkies in his hand. “I’m excited to finally taste them.”

Other popular Hostess treats Ho Hos and Ding Dongs are also back on shelves, but fans of Sno Balls and Suzy Q’s will have to wait a little while longer, according to the company’s website.
