FORT GREENE — Fort Greene is about the get a little sweeter.
The empty lots at 72-74 Hanson Place will soon be home to Vermont's Black Bear Sugarworks Farm Stand. Owner and maple farmer Mark Hastings, 57, plans to serve maple creemees (soft serve maple ice cream), old-fashioned maple cream sodas, all-natural hot dogs, and grass-fed beef chili cheese dogs plus more sugary goodies from Vermont beginning in late July, Brownstoner reported.
"I am hoping to bring small Vermont farmer's products straight to Brooklyn," Hastings said. "The farm stand will provide our local farmers a way to bring their goods to a larger market."
Hastings decided to move his farm stand, formerly located off the I-91 in Brattleboro, Vt., to Brooklyn at the end of last season.
He rented the former flea market space for two years and will bring a fully assembled farm stand and kiosk from Vermont to the lots. The food kiosk will serve prepared foods while a nearby stand will sell Hastings' artisanal maple syrups straight from his farm in the southern Green Mountains of Vermont.
All of the prepared foods come from products made at small Vermont farms.
He also hopes to set up picnic tables, chairs, a canopy and possibly a small horseshoe pitch.
"I want it to feel like a campsite," he said.
And when the weather cools, Hastings will sell Vermont Christmas trees in the Hanson Place lots.
