CARROLL GARDENS — Erik Johnson has been cutting silhouettes since he was 10 years old.

Using surgical scissors and a sharp eye, Johnson deftly carves his subject’s profile in paper to create the silhouette, a representation of a person or object as a solid shape with defined edges.

“It’s cut live [and] free-hand,” he said.

Fifteen years ago, Johnson started cutting silhouettes professionally through his studio “Silhouettes by Erik” in Charlotte, N.C., which hosts events at toy stores, state fairs and museums, among other.

Johnson will be bringing his artistic skills to Madison Rose, a maternity and kids' boutique located at 313 Court St., on June 9, where parents can have the memento created for their children in just five minutes.

Adults and teenagers are also welcome to sit for their silhouettes, priced at $25 for originals and $15 for copies with an additional $20 for framing, he added.

“It takes a keen eye, artistic ability and a lot of practice,” said Johnson, who is one of about 15 silhouette artists in the country.

“It’s a unique keepsake.”

Silhouettes by Erik will hold an event at Madison Rose (313 Court St.), on June 9 from 12:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Appointments can be made here. Walk-ins are also welcomed.
