BATTERY PARK CITY — A quick but powerful storm ripped through Battery Park City Saturday, taking down at least seven large trees and damaging a restaurant, the Battery Park City Authority said.

Damage from the furious rain and hail storm, which hit about 4 p.m. on Saturday, was still being cleaned up on Monday, according to a BPCA spokesman, but no injuries were reported.

Seven trees were uprooted along the waterfront esplanade in between North Cove and Albany Street, the BPCA said.

At least one large tree crashed into the tented outdoor seating area of Merchants River House, a restaurant that sits on the esplanade at 375 South End Ave., the BPCA said.

Parks workers will need several days to finish clearing away the massive trees, but the esplanade remained open, the authority said. Merchants was up and running on Monday.
