NEW YORK CITY — Workers on Friday mounted a massive spire atop One World Trade Center, raising the structure to its final height of 1,776 feet, reports said.
The 408-foot spire propelled the building to its place as the tallest in the United States, several feet higher than the Twin Towers that once stood there until their destruction in the 9/11 attacks.
The spire was raised into position last week. When completed, it will act as a broadcast antenna and ward off aircraft with bright-red LED lights, according to the Associated Press.
