BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn man with a violent past was charged with stabbing his girlfriend to death outside his Sunset Park apartment Saturday morning then trying to slit his own throat, police said.

Alex Santiago, 44, was charged with second-degree murder for the death of Tara Beardsall, 31, a TriBeCa resident who had previously taken out an order of protection against him.

Cops raced to Santiago's apartment on 51st Street beneath the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn just before 10:30 a.m., police say, where they found Beardsall lying on the sidewalk with a severe stab wound to her neck.

Moments later, they also discovered Santiago, who was inside his apartment with an apparent self-inflicted knife wound to his neck.

Beardsall was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. Santiago was in critical condition at the hospital. He was arrested there Monday.

It wasn't Santiago's first run-in with cops, police said. He has previous arrests for kidnapping, assault, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to cops and court records. He had been scheduled to appear in court on those charges June 28.
