Occupy Sandy Church Rebuilds After 'Suspicious' Fire In Clinton Hill

By Janet Upadhye | April 2, 2013 8:52am

CLINTON HILL — The Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew will begin to rebuild after a "suspicious" fire damaged its front doors and foyer during Christmas of last year.

Conctruction will begin this week and continue into the summer, according to News 12.

The Episcopal church served as the headquarters for Occupy Sandy where volunteers working with the relief group cooked meals and collected donations for victims in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The sanctuary, filled with sleeping bags, blankets, food supplies, and other donations was not affected by the fire.

Damages will cost the church $2 million and will be paid for by insurance and donations.

The fire was labeled "suspicious" by the FDNY.

The Rev. Michael Sniffen, the church's rector, said he is certain the fire was caused by an arsonist after finding two gasoline containers outside the church.
