Bus Driver Accused of Killing Girlfriend Had Domestic Violence Charges

JAMAICA — The Queens man who was arrested Wednesday for allegedly strangling his 27-year-old girlfriend to death and dumping her body in a Jamaica marsh was an MTA bus driver and had been arrested twice before for abusing the young mom, court documents allege.

Months before her body was discovered floating in the waters off the Idlewild Park Preserve Tuesday morning, Kadie Ann Chambers' boyfriend, Carlos Evelyn, allegedly kicked her, choked her and one evening threw her clothes from their house while yelling, "Get the f--- out!" court documents say.

Chambers was granted an order of protection, but the judge decided to dismiss the cases if Evelyn stayed out of trouble until next year.

"GOD please carry me as I have to get my nephew and make funeral arrangements for my baby sister," wrote a woman on Facebook who identified herself as the victim's sister. "She died not wanting to leave her son & I'll make sure my nephew wants for nothing .....I love you baby sister."

The pair often shouted at each other during heated arguments, said neighbors at their former home in St. Albans.

"Their relationship was rocky," said former neighbor Mindy Melendez. "They had been going at it for years."

Things came to a head last September when Evelyn, 30, was accused of attacking Chambers twice within two weeks, according to court records. Charges from these two attacks were set to be dropped in January 2014 if Evelyn stayed out of trouble until then, the judge in the case decided.

Chambers, who has a young son with Evelyn, was granted an order of protection after the two September incidents, records show.

"After they broke up, they tried to talk it out because of the baby," Melendez said.

But the couple clashed again on Tuesday morning in their home, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a statement.

Chambers grabbed Evelyn's shirt and he lunged for her throat, according to Brown. With one hand he tightened his grip and with the other he slugged her in the face three times, Brown said. After 10 seconds, she collapsed unconscious on the floor.

The medical examiner's office determined that she died from strangulation and asphyxiation, Brown said.

The killing sparked an outpouring of grief on Facebook.

"Domestic Violence!," wrote the woman who said she was the victim's sister. "I tried...we tried, I was always there for my baby sister...I tried GOD I tried but I feel like it wasn't enough ...."

SrEvan Pierre-Louis wrote: "Deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family. So sorry to hear about this. I will be praying you you all."

Neighbors were shocked by the allegations because they had always thought of Evelyn as a pleasant person.

"When it came down to it, he's a nice guy," said Melendez's partner Indiana Knowles.

But Evelyn allegedly attacked Chambers on Sept. 3, 2012, yelling at her while throwing her clothes out and then choking her, according to documents.

Thirteen days later, he was accused of kicking her and throwing her into a headlock, according to documents. She suffered serious bruises in the attack, according to court records.

After Tuesday morning's attack, Evelyn put Chambers' body into his car and drove her to the Idlewild Park Preserve, where he dumped her body, prosecutors said.

He then disposed of the clothing he was wearing during the attack, Brown said.

Police arrested Evelyn Wednesday and charged him with murder and tampering with physical evidence. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

The MTA did not immediately return calls for comment.
