BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Brooklyn's newest bridge is now open — and it's putting a bounce in visitors' steps.
Squibb Bridge, which connects Brooklyn Heights to Brooklyn Bridge Park, has a sign at its entrance that warns, "It is designed to be lightweight and flexible, the bridge will bounce as you walk over it."
The sloping $5 million footbridge at Columbia Heights and Middagh Street drops by nearly 40 feet as it descends to the waterfront's Pier 1.
"I am so excited that it's finally open," said local resident Marie Burke. "But I want to watch someone else walk on it before I do."
Designed by Ted Zoli of the HNTB Corporation, the bridge is made from rot-resistant black locust wood and stainless steel cables.
The bridge's supports are located underneath the walkway, not above it, which allows for unobstructed views of the Lower Manhattan skyline.
