NEW YORK — An unmanned aircraft was spotted about 3 miles from John F. Kennedy International Airport Monday, authorities said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the flying object, which it says was hovering 1,750 feet in the air.

The pilot of Alitalia Flight 608 noticed the 3-foot-wide aircraft about 1:15 p.m., the FBI said.

The aircraft — which was black and had four propellers — came within 200 feet of the plane, according to the bureau.

"The FBI is asking anyone with information about the unmanned aircraft or the operator to contact us," Special Agent in Charge John Giacalone said in a statement. "Our paramount concern is the safety of aircraft passengers and crew."

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 212-384-1000. Tipsters do not have to give their name.
