WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Parents will have a chance to learn more about their school options this weekend, as the District 6 Community Education Council will be hosting a kindergarten fair at P.S. 48 P.O. Michael Buczek.

The bilingual fair will be held Saturday at the school, which is located on 4360 Broadway between West 186th and West 187th streets. Representatives from more than 25 zoned, choice and charter schools will pack the school's gymnasium and cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

School applications will be distributed, too.

Organizer Allison James said the purpose of the fair is to help provide information to District 6 parents, many of whom don't know about their options ahead of the March 1 application deadline.

"There is no information about zoned schools. It's all hearsay," said James, whose 3-year-old daughter, Sophia, will enter pre-K next year. "There's lots of great zoned schools in District 6. People just don't know about them."

There will be no presentations. Instead, school representatives will be at open tables to answer questions and help parents.

"This fair offers the schools access to the next generation and it offers the parents a chance to see how they can help their children, beyond just in the home," James added.
