New Yorkers Have Fun in the Snow after Winter Storm Nemo

By Tom Liddy | February 9, 2013 2:18pm

NEW YORK CITY — Winter Storm Nemo came in like a lion and went out like a lamb, leaving New Yorkers to dust of their sleds, skis and skates to have some fun in the snow.

From activities organized by the Parks Department to pickup snowball fights, option to clown around in the Big Apple abounded.

The city dodged the worst of the storm, which walloped Long Island and New England with more than two feet of snow, but there was still enough of the white stuff to turn the city into a winter wonderland — more than 11 inches in Central Park as of 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Marc Trevino and his wife, Camille Orme, played in ABC Playground in the East Village with their daughters Clara and Rowan, 4, Saturday morning.

They said they had been sledding for approximately an hour and a half. and were undaunted by the chill still hanging in the air.

"It's awesome," said Orme, 38. "We love the snow."

Added Trevino, 45: "After Sandy, we knew this was going to be easy."

Asked what they liked best about the snow, Orme explained that 4-year-old Rowan "was pretending to be a wolf" and that she liked to pretend to be a snow-dwelling canine — even growling.

Her older sister, Clara, scoffed at this make-believe.

"She likes everything," Clara said of her sister.

In Central Park, parents and kids sledded while others took advantage of the plush snowfall by cross country skiing.

Jocelyn, 31, and her husband Eric, also 31, both from New York, were enjoying some winter fun in Central Park by playing catch with snowballs.

"We're just here to play and have fun in the snow," Jocelyn said.

Khohei Suzuki, 31, enjoyed some skiing with his wife Kana, 32, and their 13-month-old son Lee, in Sheep Meadow.

"This our first winter here — we only arrived last April — so we are having fun skiing and just enjoying the snow in Central Park.

"It's a lot of fun."

In Fort Greene, a group of friends took to a rooftop for a snowball fight.

Even those digging out from the storm were having fun.

Dil Collin and Israel Bonanno were shoveling snow outside of ABC Playground, at Norfolk and Houston Streets. They said that they were having a blast — even though they had to work on a Saturday

"It's great!" said Collin, 40. "It's a lot of fun."

The Parks Department hosted "Snow Days" at parks around the five boroughs where kids could sled, have snowmen building contests, snowball fights and free hot chocolate from noon to 3 p.m.

The department also has a list of sledding spots in each borough. DNAinfo has also compiled a guide to the best sledding spots in the city.

Asphalt Green held a massive snowman building contest from 2-4 p.m. at the Murphy Center at 555 E. 90th St.

At the event, Jack Reilly, 7, placed a cap on his snowman, with a helping hand from his father Ed who said, "Its supposed to be Michael Floyd, who plays for the Arizona Cardinals."
