WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Police are warning residents to keep an eye on valuables in their cars after a rash of break-ins near a Washington Heights intersection earlier this month.
Three cars were broken into near West 160th Street and Riverside Drive on Jan. 19, cops said. Electronics were stolen from one of the cars, police added.
At the 33rd Precinct's monthly community council meeting last week, NYPD Captain Fausto Pichardo reminded residents to keep valuables out of sight when they leave their cars.
"A lot of our car break-ins, people are getting their cars broken into for the GPS," Pichardo said.
"If there are 10 cars and none of them have GPS, I can almost assure you that no cars are going to get broken into. That one car that has the GPS out — that's the target."
Break-ins were a problem for the area last October as well. In the fall, police arrested two people believed to be responsible for up to eight break-ins, the NYPD said.
