EAST VILLAGE — A taxi slammed into an elderly woman near Avenue C Thursday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

The unidentified victim was trying to cross East 6th Street about 12:45 p.m. when an eastbound taxi SUV slammed into her, cops and witnesses said.

The driver seemed to see her and tried to swerve out of the way, but struck her chest with the right side of the vehicle, throwing her about 5 feet, witnesses said.

She lay in the middle of the street gushing blood from her head and mouth until paramedics arrived, witnesses said.

She was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell in an unknown condition, police said.

The taxi remained on the scene.

"The cab driver jumped out of the car, his eyes open just in total shock," said John Neri, a construction worker who witnessed the crash. "I think he wanted to help, but he was just standing over her not saying a word. I don't think he knew what to do."

Neri added that others stopped to help the victim.

"A nurse came by and said she had to be turned on her side, that she was choking on her own blood," Neri said. "Everybody wanted to help. It really looked bad."

Police were investigating the incident Thursday evening.
