QUEENS — The borough president's race is starting to get crowded.

Barry Grodenchik, who has worked as a staffer at Queens Borough Hall for more than a decade, said he will officially kick off his campaign for Borough President Tuesday.

He will join a large field of candidates that now includes City Councilman Leroy Comrie, former City Councilwoman Melinda Katz, Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr., and two State Senators: Jose Peralta and Tony Avella.

Current Queens Borough President Helen Marshall cannot run for re-election due to term limits.

Grodenchik currently serves as Marshall's Director of Community Boards and until recently was also her top deputy, before stepping down from that position to run for borough president.

He had also served as chief administrative officer for former Borough President Claire Shulman and said his experience makes him a good candidate for the job.

“I am delighted to join with so many family members, friends and longtime supporters as I announce my candidacy to lead the most diverse county in America,” said Grodenchik, a former assemblyman, in a statement.

The campaign will officially kick off during a fundraiser held at the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates in Jamaica Estates on Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Congressman Joseph Crowley is expected to attend, Grodenchik’s campaign said.

Grodenchik, a graduate of Jamaica High School and Binghamton University, grew up in Pomonok Houses in Flushing and now lives in Hollis Hills.
