Forest Hills Zumba Fans to Dance for Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser

By Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska | January 8, 2013 5:26pm

QUEENS — A Forest Hills health club is hosting a Zumba workout this weekend to raise funds in the effort to cure multiple sclerosis.

Organizers are expecting between 50 and 100 people at the event this Sunday at N.Y. Sportek on Queens Boulevard, said Dov Medina, the owner of N.Y. Sportek.

The idea is the brainchild of Lori Feren, a local resident, whose mother, Deborah Siegelaub, was diagnosed in 2001 with multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system.

“I’m trying to make the most of the situation,” said Feren, 29, who also works as a fundraiser for the Children’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan. “I want to make people aware of the problem and to help find resources to drive research for a cure.”

When Feren, who says she loves Zumba, realized how passionate people are about the workout, she said she came up with the idea of organizing a fundraiser based on it. She then approached Zumba instructors who agreed to conduct the Sunday’s fundraising workout for free.

Participants will also play raffles with prizes donated by local businesses, she said.

Feren said she has organized two similar events in the past but on a smaller scale. Those two workouts raised about $3,000, Feren said.

Tickets, which cost $15 ($20 at the door) can be bought at mszumba.brownpapertickets.com.

Those who want to donate more can also purchase special ticket packages.

The two-hour event kicks off at 1:15 p.m.

All proceeds will go to the National MS Society New York City - Southern New York Chapter.

N.Y. Sportek is located at the Forest Hills Jewish Center at 106-06 Queens Blvd., 3rd Floor.
