INWOOD — A man suspected of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death before turning the knife on himself on New Year's Eve remained in intensive care Tuesday, police said.

The 21-year-old man, who has not been officially named but was identified by the victim's family as her ex-boyfriend, was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital after stabbing himself in Fort Tryon Park Monday afternoon, officials said.

Police said the man stabbed Edith Rojas, 19, to death outside her apartment at 75 Thayer St. just after 3:47 p.m. before fleeing to the park.

Police arrested him in the large fountain in Anne Loftus playground Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday morning, residents of the building struggled to cope with the tragedy.

Jose Quintanas, the building's superintendent, said he could not make sense of Rojas' murder as he cleaned her blood off the sidewalk outside the building.

"For someone to do something like that, it's senseless," he said
