After-Christmas Furniture Sale Offers Top Home Design Deals in NYC

SOHO — For many New Yorkers, the Room & Board post-Christmas sale offers high-quality furniture at more manageable prices. This self-taught decorator considers it one of the best furniture sales of the year, when you can get modern furniture for as much as 50 percent off.

By the time the doors opened to the annual clearance Wednesday morning at the store's 105 Wooster Street location, a 31-person line had formed.

"This is my first time here, but I've heard great things," said Sundi Lofty, of Prospect Heights, who was proud to be the first on line, arriving two hours early for the 10 a.m. event.

Second in line was a veteran Room & Board sale shopper, Ruth Oron, who has furnished her Chelsea apartment from Dec. 26 sales at the retailer's flagship for the last four years.

"I love the furniture here, I got a couch, two chairs and more. The quality is so good."

This year, Oron was shopping for her best friend, an elderly art teacher, who needs a new couch.

"We came last week," she noted, "and we know the exact one we want."

The wait was worth it, as Oron ended up nabbing the 89-inch, two-cushion sofa in pewter for $1,259 — a 30-percent discount from its original price of $1,799.

Less lucky was Angela Sprutsko, of Hoboken, who also wanted the same couch. She was 11th on line, arriving at 9:20 a.m. in the hopes of upgrading her furniture at the sale.

"All our stuff doesn't match," she explained, gesturing to her husband, who accompanied her for the shopping mission. "His stuff is vintage, old. Mine's more modern."

After the couple missed out on their dream couch, they were considering a pair of arm chairs but had yet to make a decision.

Room & Board, known for its wide selection of modern furniture, has made the post-Christmas sale a tradition at all 14 of its showrooms nationwide.

"We get a set change every January, so now is the time to retire the items that are being discontinued or upgraded with a fresh look," explained Room & Board salesperson Jason Corff.

"The great deal this year is in our upholstered items," he added, pointing to dozens of side chairs and couches on sale around him.

The Room & Board sale continues through January 6, with items ranging from 30 to 50 percent off in-store and online.
