RED HOOK — A half-block-long pile of rotting wood, cardboard, overflowing trash bags and other refuse has sat on Red Hook's main commercial thoroughfare for weeks, spilling across the street and sidewalk as it awaits pickup by the city's Department of Sanitation.
The garbage, initially detritus from Hurricane Sandy damage and cleanup, has grown over the past two weeks as nearby workers and residents added trash to the pile on Van Brunt Street near Pioneer Street.
"It's disgusting," said Eddie Acosta, 66, a local resident, as he walked past the pile. "Someone needs to write about this."
The pile sits in front of two popular Red Hook bars: Red Hook Bait & Tackle and Brooklyn Ice House.
"Sanitation needs to do something about it," Brooklyn Ice House owner Trevor Budd said.
The Sanitation Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday afternoon.
