EAST NEW YORK — A 41-year-old man was shot and killed in his East New York apartment early Friday, police said.
Edwin Pacheco was attacked by two assailants who broke into his basement apartment at 496 Logan Place shortly after 9 a.m., Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
The attackers first broke into a second-floor apartment in the building, ransacking the home and demanding money from a person inside, Kelly said.
They then went down to the building's basement and confronted Pacheco and his brother, Kelly said.
"They pistol whipped his brother and they ultimately shot [Pacheco] and killed him," Kelly said.
Police believe the crime may be drug related.
"They were looking for money," Kelly said of the suspects, who had not been caught as of Friday afternoon. "It appears to be a drug rip-off. Some of the individuals in that building have extensive drug records."
It was not immediately clear if any money or personal items were taken from Pacheco or his brother, police said.
