BROOKLYN — A smoke condition aboard a downtown 2 train at the Atlantic Avenue subway station in Brooklyn caused significant delays for straphangers Tuesday evening, especially those headed to the Barclays Center for the matchup between the Knicks and the Nets.
The smoke was reported around 6 p.m., and fire crews were investigating the source of the smoke, which was likely caused by brake pads on the 2 train, a fire department spokesman said.
Immediately following the incident, 2 and 3 trains were stopping at Chambers Street in Manhattan, while 4 and 5 trains weren’t traveling past Bowling Green station.
But service was restored just before 8 p.m., according to the MTA’s website.
Although LIRR service in that area was suspended earlier in the evening, service was being restored in both directions not long after the smoke condition was reported, an LIRR spokesman said.
The Nets were scheduled to play the Knicks beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
