INWOOD — Listen to some poetry and help bring back a local bookstore.
Word Up Community Bookshop, a beloved uptown bookstore that is searching for a new home, is hosting a benefit event Dec. 7 at an Inwood cafe.
The event, which will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Darling Coffee at 4961 Broadway, will feature musical performances by Unigen and GioSafari and will be "a night of music, poetry, and fun to benefit the cause," according to Word Up. There will be a $5 suggested donation, with proceeds going toward re-launching the local store.
Word Up has been searching for a new home ever since it lost the month-to-month lease for its 176th street location in August. In November, the all-volunteer bookstore started an indieGoGo campaign in the hopes of raising $60,000 to cover the cost of finding a new location.
Daniella Gitlin, a volunteer at Word Up, said the bookstore aims to find an affordable space uptown, anywhere from 165th to 190th streets.
"We're going to get in on a place within the next month," Gitlin said. "We don't want to stay closed too long."
