Downtown Brooklyn to Get Seven-Screen Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

By Janet Upadhye | December 4, 2012 2:31pm

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — For a city of over 2.5 million residents, Brooklyn has surprisingly few large-scale cinemas. Downtown, they're even scarcer.

That will soon change. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has announced plans to open a seven-screen theater in the City Point development on the Fulton Street Mall.

"I am extremely excited about the major development in downtown Brooklyn and proud to be a part of it,” Alamo Drafthouse Founder and CEO Tim League said in a statement.  “Although more than two years on the horizon, I can tell you that the City Point Brooklyn Alamo will be our best theater yet."

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is known for offering food and drink service directly to theatergoers in their seats and its strict no talking and no texting policy. The Texas-based chain currently has theaters in over ten cities including San Francisco, Denver and Houston.

Two new locations are also planned for the Upper West Side and for Yonkers.

The Fulton Street Mall is rapidly developing, recently opening Armani Exchangewith plans for an incoming Century 21 clothing store, H&M and TJ Maxx.

The new movie theater is currently scheduled to open in 2015.
