EAST FLATBUSH — Five children were injured after a school bus and van collided on Utica Avenue Monday morning, FDNY officials said.

The children were not seriously injured in the 6 a.m. crash, Department of Education and fire officials said. Two adults were also hurt, officials said, but their injuries appeared to be minor, too.

All of the victims were taken to Kings County Hospital Center, an FDNY spokesman said.

The accident occurred on Church Avenue, where the van swerved abruptly from its lane and slammed into the oncoming bus, the bus driver said.

"If he didn't hit the bus, he would have killed all these people on the sidewalk," said the bus's 55-year-old driver, Paul Appiah.

The students attend Excellence Girls Charter School in Bushwick, said a spokeswoman for the Department of Education.

Two hours later, another school bus was involved in an accident when a Jeep rear-ended it in the Bronx, injuring nine people, including five children, officials said.
