By Jesse Lent | December 2, 2012 3:34pm

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — The NYPD is asking the public for help catching a man wanted for an attempted rape that took place in northern Manhattan shortly after midnight on Saturday morning.

The man allegedly followed his 24-year-old victim into her apartment building, and attempted to sexually assault her in the stairwell. The victim was able to fight him off and flee.

Police could not disclose the exact location of the attack to protect the victim, but said it occurred in the vicinity of Rucker Park, which is at W. 155th Street and Eighth Avenue at the border of Sugar Hill and Washington Heights.

The suspect is described as between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-10 and in his early to mid-30s. At the time of the attack, police say he was wearing jeans, black boots and a black jacket with a fur-trimmed hood.

Those with information in regards to this incident are asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.
