FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A parking lot attendant was killed by an SUV that fell from a lift in a Barclay Street garage Monday morning, authorities and witnesses said.
The accident took place about 7:10 a.m. in the garage at 233 Broadway, near Barclay Street.
The male victim, whose name and age have not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
"It looks like it rolled off the lift," said FDNY Battalion Chief David Simms, who added that the vehicle appeared to have fallen from a height of about 6 feet.
The accident is still under investigation, authorities said.
Cesar Callan, 55, an attorney, parked in the garage every day and said the worker who was killed had been there for about two years.
"[He] and I would kid around every day," Callan said. "We horsed around and shared some good times, trying to make every day the best day possible."
Gerard Marini, who works for a security company in the same building as the garage, said he had parked his car there every day for the past five years.
When he got to the garage Monday morning and found it blocked by police vehicles, he parked nearby and heard about the accident from another garage worker.
"I ran right over here," Marini said. "I'm shocked."
Jose Vargas, 45, who works in the building across the street and drops his car off at the garage every morning, was also taken aback by the incident.
"It's unbelievable this happened," he said.
