Dunkxchange Sneakerfest Comes to Hammerstein Ballroom

By Mathew Katz | November 23, 2012 12:44pm

HELL'S KITCHEN — You might as well stop by just for kicks.

Sneakerheads will have a chance to check out some of the freshest new kicks this weekend at the Dunkxchange, a celebration of sneaker culture aimed at collectors and newbies alike.

The festival runs on Sunday, Nov. 25 at the Hammerstein Ballroom, 311 W. 34th St., from noon to 8 p.m.

Forget the Black Friday sales — the Dunkxchange is one of the best places to find deals on new and rare sneakers from both local and international vendors.

The sneaker-fest was originally set for Nov. 11, but was rescheduled because of Hurricane Sandy. The updated event will donate a percentage of its proceeds to victims of the superstorm.

The Dunkxchange started in 2005 as a small event for sneakerheads to buy or trade rare kicks, but it's evolved into a phenomenon for footwear lovers in major cities around the world.

More than 100 vendors will show off their stuff at Sunday's event, giving fans ample opportunity to find their next great pair of kicks.

The day-long celebration is not just about buying sneakers: it's a celebration of the music, fashion and art that makes up sneakerhead culture. In addition to the sales, there's also skateboarding demos throughout the day.

The day will end with a sneaker battle hosted by Suraj from Jersey City's Sneaker Room, where opponents will face off to see who has the best kick collection.

Tickets for the Dunkxchange are $10 online, $15 at the door, or $25 for VIP entry.
